NC Tech Works is a statewide work-based learning initiative that advances digital citizenship while preparing high school students for careers in information technology and related fields. With two innovative programs, Tech Team and Digital Ambassadors, NC Tech Works gives students meaningful paid work experience while addressing critical technology and workforce needs across North Carolina.
Launched in 2020 in response to the shift to one-to-one student devices, Tech Team equips students with hands-on training in device repair and IT support. By maintaining and repairing their school district’s technology, students gain valuable technical skills, earn industry-recognized certifications and reduce costs for schools while also easing the workload of IT departments. Since its start, Tech Team has expanded across rural districts and now supports models ranging from classroom integration to pre-apprenticeship pathways.
Digital Ambassadors began in 2023 as a way to bridge the digital divide many North Carolinians are experiencing, especially our aging population. The program empowers students to strengthen their communities by teaching digital literacy skills through workshops and one-on-one training. Students help participants build confidence with essential skills like navigating the internet, using email, and staying safe online.
By participating in NC Tech Works, students not only gain technical and workplace skills but also become part of a talent pipeline that North Carolina businesses rely on for success. Over the past five years, North Carolina’s tech sector jobs have grown by 19%, the eighth-highest growth rate in the country. NC Tech Works fosters local talent development by providing students with meaningful, paid work experience early in their careers while simultaneously expanding digital access for communities statewide.
