Handling PII as a Digital Ambassador

  • Do not let the people you are working with share their PII with you. Let them know this is out of respect for them and their privacy. If they do accidentally share private information with you, do not write it down or discuss it with anyone else.
  • Only ask for the information that you need for the task you are working on. If you need email addresses or phone numbers, do not write them down. As a Digital Ambassador group, determine the safest way for the people you work with to contact you and share information.
  • Allow the people you work with to enter their logins and passwords. Do not enter them for anyone. If they are creating a new password, have them keep it in a safe place where they can refer to it if they need it again. Model what you are asking of others and never share your own PII with the person you are helping. Never share PII through email, social media, or any other digital means. Email and texting are NOT secure! Tell those you work with to never email or text passwords or PII to you or anyone else.
  • In public or a large group, teach your adult learners to watch out for shoulder surfing. Be conscious of your surroundings and who might be watching over your shoulder when you enter passwords or other sensitive information. Set an example by looking away when others enter their login and password information.
