Deliver Your Instruction

There are many different teaching strategies that can be used in different settings. One simple instructional delivery method is the “I do, We do, You do” strategy. It should work well when you are working one-on-one or with groups. It’s especially helpful when you are teaching technology skills, such as how to use a device or application.

The steps are:

“I do.” Model what your learner will be able to do. Model the complete process. Then break it down into smaller steps. This is easiest to do in person, but you can also include a full model in a tutorial, especially in a video.

“We do.” Work through the steps you have previously modeled together. This is where a step-by-step tutorial is helpful. Monitor your learner. Some may want to go slowly and repeat steps. More self-directed learners can do multiple steps at one time.

“You do. I help.” Include time for your learner to practice with your help. They may need to ask you questions or go back to the “We do” stage. That’s fine.

"You do. I watch." Let them try on their own.

If you can’t get through all of the steps because of time, your learner can complete the “You do” sections after your session. That’s why having a handout or tutorial you can leave behind is especially helpful. Some of your adult learners may feel comfortable with links to handouts or videos online. It’s probably best to have printed handouts you can leave behind when you are first starting out.

If you do leave them to practice, start your next session by reviewing what they’ve practiced. You may also want to share a follow-up email to see how their practice is going and if there are any questions you can address when you meet the next time.
