Module 5: Interacting with Technology

Introduction

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computing devices- phones, tablets, cameras, data storage, smart speakers, kitchen appliances, and even light bulbs and other devices. It has revolutionized the way we live, learn, communicate, and do business in just a few decades. The Internet allows people all over the world to share information, interact, and access resources from almost anywhere.

Some of the people you work with will have grown up before the Internet was available commercially. Even though they lived through its development, it can be a lot for some people to comprehend. Consider your own experiences using devices that connect to the Internet. Those devices have probably changed even in your lifetime. The things you can do now on those devices have also probably changed. You might say the things you can do on the Internet have evolved over your lifetime.

Put yourself in the shoes of an older adult who did not grow up with the Internet around them all the time. For some, it wasn't even available yet. They may be used to doing certain things one way--without technology. They might benefit from using technology, however. They just may not know what's possible. This module focuses on the ways we use devices connected to the Internet to interact with others. The older adults you work with will have varied understanding and experiences with those devices. They don't need to understand the ins and outs of how the Internet works as much as understand that it connects us through the devices we use.Let's begin by sharing your thoughts about the skills older adults will need with the team on the discussion board or in the group. Review what other people have written to see what other key ideas are mentioned

Before you begin this module, let's find out the strengths and weaknesses of eachperson on the team. Instructors, please open this document (it will force you to make a copy) and set the permissions to anyone with the link can edit. Then give the link to your students. Have the students discuss the team's strengths and weaknesses.
