The Digital Ambassadors CourseModule 5: Interacting With Technology

Objective 1: Connecting to and Using the Internet

Most people connect to the Internet using a web browser installed on a device connected to the Internet. The devices older adults might use include desktops and laptops, tablets, and phones. If the people you are working with are confused about connecting to the Internet, explain that connecting to the Internet is like tuning into a radio station. You need a device like a computer, tablet, or smartphone and a connection through a wired or wireless network. Here's how it usually works:

  1. Turn on your device.
  2. Find the WiFi symbol or network settings on the device.
  3. Choose the WiFi network at the location you are teaching. Check to be sure you can get on the network before you start your class or coaching session.
  4. Enter the password, if needed.
  5. Wait a moment, and you're connected!

As a Digital Ambassador, you will need to be familiar with how to find the WiFi settings and connect to a network on different devices including computers, tablets, and smartphones. The most common operating systems (OS) you'll have to navigate are likely Windows 10 or 11 (and maybe some earlier versions), Apple Mac, Apple iOS for phones and iPads, and Android. The manufacturers of the devices and who provide these OS often maintain excellent support sites you can use to find specific step-by-step directions. These links are for you to use if needed as you work with adults. It is not necessary to read through each article but you might want to click on them just to check them out.

Visit these support sites for specific directions to connect to a network.
